Truckstop and Roadhouse set for Roma

The signatories to the agreement officially put pen to paper today, with United Petroleum Pty Ltd set to lease land at Roma Saleyards to build and operate a vehicle re-fuelling station and roadhouse.

The development is the vision of Council and an outcome of the Roma Saleyards Master Plan. The plan when fully realised will position the saleyards as a transport hub, servicing the livestock and heavy transport industry as well as travelling motorists. The facility will support operators of all trucks including up to type 2 road trains.

United Petroleum is an independent, Australian owned petrol and convenience company which offers customers premium quality fuels and competitive pricing Australia-wide. It is one of the fastest growing independent companies in Australia, specialising in the retail and wholesale fuel markets; convenience stores and ethanol manufacture; generating employment for over 2,500 Australians.

Council went to tender late last year in a competitive bid to attract an operator and is delighted to announce a long term lease to United on the site. The truck stop will incorporate a range of fuels to suit the motoring public, and a facility where transport operators can stop overnight, shower, get a good meal, and refuel for their journey.

As a value-add to the facility, Council is making provision for a considerable hard stand parking area for the many heavy transport vehicles that need an overnight stay. This will assist in relieving the pressure on operators who find it difficult to access a safe overnight park, close to amenities in Roma.

A Council spokesperson said the truckstop will be a great addition to the area.

"Although Roma is already serviced by excellent fuel providers, the ability to provide enough hard stand parking space for heavy trucks, out of town, and rest and recreation facilities as well, is a real win for travellers. The deal will also return a long term revenue stream for the ratepayers and provide a useful enhancement to the saleyards precinct which is quickly becoming a transport and economic hub."

United Petroleum is now poised to commence its development process with Council with construction of the roadhouse currently scheduled for completion in 2017.
