Located at the eastern entrance to town, The Big Rig is a fascinating and surprising insight into the history and progression of the Oil & Gas industry. For the first time in Australian history, gas was discovered (by accident) in 1900 – right here in Roma! Today, the industry makes up a huge part of our local economy and the lifestyle of many locals.
At any time of the day, we welcome visitors to explore ‘The Oil Patch’, a self guided, outdoor museum that is open from 8:30AM – 5:00PM (last entry at 4:000PM), daily.
With a variety of interpretive displays, machinery and a theatre, you will experience the fascinating history of the industry, including the formation of the gas, the search and discovery, progression of the industry and gain an insight into what is happening in the field, today.
Be sure to call in to The Big Rig Café for a local treat, including some of the best coffee and snacks in town and take home a local keepsake from The Big Rig Gift Shop.
At night, we look forward to welcoming you back to join us for The Big Rig Night Show, under the stars. During this 35 minute presentation, visitors experience the colourful history of Roma's (and indeed, Australia's) Oil & Gas industry, local characters of the time and industry techniques through impressive light and flame displays.
